Distribution and state of Botrychium virginianum (Botrychiaceae) populations in Ukraine
Abstract We performed a detailed study on the distribution and current state of
Botrychium virginianum (L.) Sw. (Botrychiaceae) populations in Ukraine. From the beginning of floristic studies to the present day, only 28 localities of
Botrychium virginianum have been recorded in Ukraine, and only two of these populations have survived to the present day. The population of the aspen and birch forest in Chernihiv Region consists of nine individuals. We discovered a new small population in
Corylus avellana stands in Rivne Region, consisting of 50 individuals. The status of this population was described, and the habitat characteristics were analysed. A comparison of the known populations of
Botrychium virginianum in Ukraine with populations of this species in other parts of its range shows that they are declining throughout Eurasia and South America. Recommendations for conserving
Botrychium virginianum populations in Ukraine were developed and discussed.
